Antique Persian Faraghan Sarouk 7'3"×10'6"
This is a room size carpet manufactured in or around the city of Sarouk in western Iran circa 1880. Sarouk later become known for the production of carpets specifically for the American market, examples of which can still be found readily today. Sarouk carpets predating this period, such as this one, are considerably more rare. These carpets displayed a more diverse array of designs and color palettes, before many of their weavers were caught up in production of the American Sarouk variety that flooded Western markets in the 1920s and 30s. This piece features a central medallion with a floral design, primarily in yellow, against a navy background. The floral motif is expanded upon in the red main field, with flowers and vines intricately laid out in blues, coral, ivory and greens.
